This is interesting.

As you may know, getting a top position in any search engine requires having two components:

• on page SEO
• off page SEO

The on page SEO includes including your keywords in the page title, page name/URL, in a header tag, in image ALT tags and spread a few times throughout your page content.

Off page SEO includes getting backlinks from other sites, using social media sites and other methods to get links pointing to your ‘money’ pages, using both anchor text links and direct links as well.

Of course, these are two of the main things needed, but there are others as well.

Now if you’re using WordPress, the entire process of getting dozens, if not hundreds of first page listings has now been made super simple.

There are basically two parts to search engine optimization.

On-Page, which is how your page is designed and optimized for the keywords you want to be found for.

And the second is Off-Page, which includes backlinks and other related strategies.

The reason why backlinks are so critical to where your site is found on the search engines is because of the way engines like Google put a value on your site. They measure your sites ‘relevancy’ based on who and how many sites are linking to you. Some say links from your own niche are more valuable, but my tests have show that it doesn’t make much of a difference. Of course, it can’t hurt.

The backlinks a search engine finds is also like a vote for your website. And as in many other areas, the more votes the better, and in this case, the higher the ranking you receive.

So now that we know why backlinks are important, what is your strategy?

Are you building links occasionally, never or regularly?

Working with both online and offline businesses for 15 years now, I’ve seen many different ways of backlink building, and the only one that works every time is to build links consistently. Not once in a while, but regularly, at least once a month.

I recently did a test to prove this. I built links to a site regularly, at least once a month, for about 6 months. Then I stopped. I waited for a few months and checked my stats. My search engine positions dropped in half, and all the places where it was ranked on the first page were now on the second or third. Some listings even went as far as being dropped from the search engine completely. Here are a few screen captures of my stats from this site:

As you can see, not only did most all my good positions drop down a few pages, many of them dropped past the third page and as we all know, if you’re not on the first page, most often you won’t be found at all.

On the other hand, the sites that I build backlinks to regularly, every month, they continue to get higher and higher positions. Here are a few stats screen caps from one of our ‘consistent’ link building sites.

The strategy is best described as slow and steady, you don’t want to build thousands of links to your site at one time. You want to build them steadily every month and you’ll be rewarded in the long term with continually growing positions on the top of the search engines. Do everything you can to do it consistently, it’s not worth the drop in positions (and traffic) if you stop – and then having to start all over again.

I’ve tested and proven this with our sites for over a year now, regardless of any search engine updates or changes. It’s not the only strategy, but this ‘turtle’ strategy works – and it’s very rewarding.

One of the things that I’ve reinforced is that even though there are many ways to earn online, having your own product is the most important one. Yes, you can diversify in other areas (more on that soon) but the foundation of all online business ought to include having your own products. It’s ESSENTIAL – it’s that important in my opinion. I mean, even top affiliate marketers are selling their own products showing you how to become successful affiliate marketers, right? I’ve always believed, watch what they DO, not what they say.

The ability to own a product, setup an affiliate program and create a buyers list are all huge in creating long term success online.

You could make software, create a report, interview an expert, record an interview, compile research, have a script made, make a bot, create a facebook app… there are hundreds of ways you can create your own product.

But that doesn’t mean you have to create one from scratch. In fact, most don’t have time for that (even though it doesn’t take that long) or the expertise (often you don’t need any) so I recommend PLR.

Unfortunately today there is so much junk out there, it’s often hard to know where to get good PLR and a fair price.

You can build a squeeze page, offer a free report, free video, great quality information or something similar. And that would work. But it does require the user to give up their information first on a web page, then download their gift. And again, that works.

But in my experience, putting a twist on this works much, much better.

What’s the twist?

Give away software!

But not just any software. Software that asks the user to register the application in order to use it. This is normal for software so it doesn’t feel any different than registering any other software and the opt-in rate is usually much higher since the user actually wants to use the software.

But where do you get the software to give away? You don’t have software development skills? Most of us don’t, but I’ve found two ways you can create unique, custom software applications that you can give away, sell or use for your own business without any programming talents needed.

But how do you get your business, cause, or organization on Facebook?
